BLACK HISTORY: REV IKE MASTER METAPHYSICIAN

"The Presence of God-in-me blesses the Presence of God-in-you, beloved child of God." Rev. Ike

We are going to take a break from the usual script of people discussed during Black History Month (Much respect to MLK, Marcus Garvey, George Washington Carver, etc) and place the focus on black people around the world who have flown under the radar of most.  Our focus will be on the contributions of black people in the sciences of the mind.

Rev. Ike (June 1, 1935 — July 28, 2009) is one of the most misconstrued and misinterpreted geniuses of the 20th Century.  He was so far ahead of his time that his message was often distorted by the media who often mocked his dazzling style and bold, open-minded philosophies.

Fast forward to 2012 and many preachers have integrated prosperity into their sermons versus preaching that poverty was virtuous and people would get their reward in heaven after death.  The Secret became a cultural phenomenon championed by Oprah that went on to introduce millions of people worldwide to the New Thought approach to reality.  Also the widespread acceptance of quantum physics/quantum mechanics into the mainstream science community which advocates that “thoughts are things” has opened millions more up to the possibility that there may be something to the New Thought movement.  (Check out the film What the Bleep Do We Know?)

The world is finally beginning to catch up to the lessons that Rev Ike has been teaching for over 40 years!  Ike was so advanced that he was able to relate revolutionary ideologies to people who many times had a superstitious, very narrow-minded view of spirituality.

“This is the do-it-yourself church,” he proclaimed. “The only savior in this philosophy is God in you.”

Rev. Ike was a master metaphysician who decoded the Scriptures in an astounding, emancipating way.  Presently, Rev. Ike's true genius is acknowledged as his lessons are widely recognized as universal truths.  He is known as a Master teacher, a mentor, and an inspiration by many famous motivational teachers and authors such as Bob Proctor and Dr. Michael Beckwith, from The Secret and Mark Victor Hansen, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul.
Listen to what the latter has to say about Rev. Ike.  Mark Victor Hansen, who created the mega-bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, cites Rev. Ike as an inspiration, “I went bankrupt and was WIPED OUT financially. I was sleeping in front of a door, when somebody said, ‘What you need to do is hear Rev. Ike. I went to hear him at his church, and I was ‘WOWED!’ At that time I had NEVER heard anybody preach and teach Positive Self-Image Psychology and Self-Motivation like Rev. Ike. I sat in the pews of his church and worked with his ‘stuff’ and now I am blessed to live in a fine house with my lovely wife and two daughters. We live in dignity and style and I am successful and prosperous beyond my wildest dreams.”
Rev. Frederick Eikerenkoetter, better known to millions as REV. IKE, “The Success and Prosperity Preacher,” has been Minister, Teacher, Motivator, Evangelist, Counselor, and Pastor to millions of people, for over 40 years.

Rev. Ike had the guts to go where most theologians, Bible teachers, and preachers would not. As an evangelist, on TV, radio, and at mass meetings, he had the “audacity” to PREACH “Prosperity NOW!” — long before it became popular to do so.  Even more shocking and audacious was the lesson that Rev. Ike taught the world: God Lives Within You!

He was labeled a heretic and renegade by many preachers.  Rev. Ike shocked the religious establishment by telling people to stop looking for help from a God outside of you -- to stop praying to some stingy, hard-hearted, hard-of-hearing God-in the-Sky...

... and to start praying to the God-in-YOU!

Rev. Ike said, "There's no more God in Jesus, than in YOU!"  He approached the scriptures from a psychological viewpoint versus taking them literally.  Rev. Ike recommended reading Neville Goddard.  In many ways he helped open minds and bridge the gap for those who may not have been able to grasp Neville’s teachings.

He was scorned by some “mainstream” and “fundamentalist” people, but now many famous preachers, teachers and authors sound just like Rev. Ike — teaching prosperity!

Because of his emphasis on material self-fulfillment, Reverend Ike alienated many traditional Christian ministers as well as leaders of the civil rights movement, who believed black churches should further social reform.  “The lack of money is the root of all evil. I am not a black preacher. I’m a green preacher. The only color of power in the American economy is green power," said Rev. Ike.

Ike was unabashed about riches being a goal, and he appealed to many -- especially during the '70s -- who were tired of preachers whose message was for their congregations to suffer and wait for their reward in heaven.

Rev. Ike's Science of Living Ministry started with only a few faithful supporters. He taught these people how to get turned on to life.

He showed them how to BE, to DO, and to HAVE all the good that they desire through the Presence and Power of God, Infinite Good, Within Everyone.  As his ministry grew, so did the affluence of many of its members who believed in the Power of God Within.  In other words, he wasn’t preaching to poor people while he kept getting richer.  He actually helped (and is still helping with his works) people all over the world take control of the latent power within man.

Rev. Ike became a Spiritual advisor to millions of people of all races, religions, and even to those with NO religious affiliation.  His message was beyond religion. He taught that the Presence of God-in-you is your Unlimited Resource of Good.

Rev. Ike’s message attracts people from all walks of life: ordinary people, the rich, the poor, the famous, movie stars, political figures, sports champions — even priests and rabbis!

His ministry has grown exponentially as thousands of testimonies and letters pour in from people all over the world who have received Good Health, Healing, Joy, Love, Success, Prosperity, Good Fortune, and More Money through applying his teachings in their lives.

Frederick Joseph Eikerenkoetter II was born on June 1, 1935, in Ridgeland, S.C. His father was a Baptist minister of Dutch-Indonesian extraction, his mother an elementary school teacher who taught her son in a one-room schoolhouse. The couple divorced when Frederick was 5.
His calling came to him early, he said. “Even when I was a young child, the other kids came to me to solve their problems,” he told the writer Clayton Riley.

At 14 he became assistant pastor for his father’s congregation, the Bible Way Baptist Church in Ridgeland. After high school, he attended the American Bible College in Chicago, receiving a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1956. After two years in the Air Force as a chaplain, he returned to Ridgeland to found the United Church of Jesus Christ for All People.

Finding the traditional Christian message constricting, he moved to Boston in 1964 to found the Miracle Temple and to practice faith-healing, which “was the big thing at the time,” he told Mr. Riley, “and I was just about the best in Boston, snatching people out of wheelchairs and off their crutches, pouring some oil over them while I commanded them to walk or see or hear.”

Two years later, still dissatisfied, he moved to New York City, setting up shop in an old Harlem movie theater, the Sunset, on 125th Street, with a marquee so narrow that it forced him to shorten his name to “Rev. Ike.” There he tinkered with his act, polishing his patter, introducing radio broadcasts and taking his show on the road.

He began to refine his message to attract a more striving, stable, middle-class audience, people who wanted to hear that their hard work should be rewarded here and now. To this end, in 1969, he paid more than half a million dollars for the old Loew’s 175th Street movie theater and made it his headquarters, calling it the Palace Cathedral. In his book “On Broadway: A Journey Uptown Over Time,” David W. Dunlap, a reporter for The New York Times, described the former theater as “Byzantine-Romanesque-Indo-Hindu-Sino-Moorish-Persian-Eclectic-Rococo-Deco style.”

With the move, the Reverend Ike stretched Christian tenets, founding the doctrine he named the Science of Living and thereby relocating the idea of God to the interior of the self, calling it “God in me,” with the power to bring the believer anything he or she desired in the way of health, wealth and peace of mind. He became, as he told Mr. Riley, “the first black man in America to preach positive self-image psychology to the black masses within a church setting.”

By the mid-1970s, Reverend Ike was touring the country and preaching over some 1,770 radio stations. Television stations in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other major markets were telecasting his videotaped sermons. A magazine he founded, Action!, reached more than a million readers.

In 1962, he married Eula May Dent. They had a son, Xavier F. Eikerenkoetter, who also became an ordained minister at the United Church and took over the ministry when his father retired. They both survive him.

Here are some good Rev. Ike quotes:
From his ebook ‘Thinkonomics’

“The more you learn to work your mind, the less you have to work your behind.”

“I teach the individual to define his ideals and to project his ideals into reality by means of visualization, affirmation and meditation.” (p. 7)

“Do not be a slave to the conditions that you are in. Do not be locked in and bound by the undesirable circumstances that you find yourself in.

Change your circumstances
by changing your self-image,
by changing your self-definition.

The Bible says, “Let the weak say, I AM strong.” I like to add, “Let the poor say, I AM rich. Let the sick say, I AM well.”

This is re-defining oneself. Let the weak re-define himself as strong. Let the poor re-define himself as rich, and so on.

See yourself in the theater of your own mind being, doing, and having the good that you desire.” (p. 10)

“Change your circumstances, your conditions, by changing your self-image, by changing your self-definition.”

“See yourself as you wish to BE” (p 11)

  7. This is great information. "We" listen to New Thought guru's and view movies like The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know without knowing the true origin of the materials. I even wondered if we were being shanghaied again with these new thought concepts brought to us by the same Europeans that shanghaied us before into believing in King James Christianity; so I personally am grateful to receive this information...We are an interesting people. We still listen to Europeans and question Africans across the board in every area of human endeavor.

  8. This is a very well written article. Rev. Ike preached truth and I hope everyone see that his message was for everyone and had nothing to do with color. Racism is so backwards and ignorant it's not even funny. Rev. Ike didn't stoop to that level. He was truly preaching peace.
